What is SEO and should I be doing it?

What is SEO?

SEO is the acronym given to the longer phrase Search Engine Optimisation. This is the name given to the activity to influence search engines such as Google to improve your websites rankings for certain keywords.

There are many search engines out there such as Yahoo, Bing, Ask.com to DuckDuckGo but the main one that most people use and talk about is Google.

In the search results of Google, it will show a list of links to pages that it considers relevant and authoritative to the keywords entered into the search box. This is decided by Google’s secret algorithm but one of these key factors is the websites authority for this phrase and the quantity and quality of links from other websites. A good example is the BBC website which many people link to and share it, as it is a reliable source for news.

What can I do to rank highly?

In simple terms, you need to be writing great content that engages people who ideally would then want to share this information with others.

Should I be doing ‘SEO’?

Again, in simple terms – YES!

No but it can be very damaging if you are doing it wrong!

Search engines such as Google will penalise you for unnaturally forcing keywords into your content that can be seen as ‘keyword stuffing’ when repeating too many times on a page or undertaking any naughty tactics such as buying links that are spammy, so don’t try to outsmart it!
