The benefits of migrating from HTTP to HTTPS

What is HTTP?
It stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol and the ‘s’ in HTTPS stands for secure.
What’s the big deal?
For two key reasons:
- Security
- Ranking boost
HTTPS become a major talking point within the SEO industry since Matt Cutts of Google announced that using SSL encryption will give sites a slight ranking boost within Google’s search engine results pages. By moving your website to HTTPS, you will need to use a SSL certificate (Secure Sockets Layer) which encrypts data when transmitted over the internet. Typically these were extremely important on e-commerce sites but we’ve seen a rise in brochure wear websites also making the switch.
How do I obtain an SSL certificate?
Your hosting provider will either supply one for a small fee or more typically they are now provided for free.
Done – what’s next?
Slow up! If this is not carried out correctly, search engines can see your website as a new domain and this could impact your rankings. Your developer needs to follow a strict process to ensure migration from HTTP to HTTPS is followed. This involves redirecting all links from their old location to their new one.
